Carol Krucoff
Do you struggle with neck and shoulder tension? You’re not alone! Neck and shoulder pain or tension are common issues in our sedentary society, says author and yoga therapist Carol Krucoff, co-founder of Duke University’s Therapeutic Yoga for Seniors training.
And Carol should know. She is the author of Healing Yoga for Neck and Shoulder Pain in which she points to the growing epidemic of neck problems in today’s and offers yoga tools that can help.
Smart phones, tablets and laptop use is leading to the new phenomenon of text neck, says Carol, and we're really just seeing the beginning of this growing problem. If you look around you, you will see many people are also caught in a constant hunched posture with the spine in a C shape instead of the S-shaped curve we need for proper spinal health.
Posture is not something that we only practice on the mat, Carol notes. Posture is something that we do throughout our day.
Physical habits often have an emotional component as well, and one of the many wonderful things about yoga is that yoga is about much more than our physical bodies. Yoga is also about our energetic bodies, our emotions. So it’s very much intertwined with all our layers of being. So recognizing what’s going on emotionally and what the emotional component is of neck and shoulder pain can be hugely important in bringing people relief. And fortunately, the yoga tool kit touches on all parts of our being.
Carol further discusses the problem of forward head posture and how headaches often are related to neck tension or neck misalignment. She also offers a way to test yourself – or your yoga students – for forwardhead posture.
