Silence is one of the most important parts of our lives, but often what we have the least, says renowned Judith Hanson Lasater in this free download.
The core of yoga is stilling the fluctuations of the mind, as described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Instead of practicing to deepen into silence, sometimes we even use our yoga practice to counteract stress, so we can push ourselves a little further, rather than restructuring our lives to limit the things that cause us to be stressed.
Rest and silence are critically important for health and longevity, Judith notes. But even in yoga, we often don’t pay much attention to this dimension in our practice.
What brings silence into our practice is making our yoga mat a sacred space. But in these days of cellphones and tablets, many people bring their electronics to their mats, and we’ve lost that impermeability. That’s disturbing the potential of allowing silence to enter into our practice.
Why do we let ourselves get depleted and then use yoga to try to get us back to neutral? Judith asks. Can we organize our lives to go from zero to positive instead of from negative to zero? This requires ‘neti, neti’, ‘not this, not this’. It requires learning to let go of certain things and not letting them enter into that sacred space.
Judith also shares how the experience of losing her twin brother at their 45th birthday led her to discover the immense healing power of restorative yoga. This experience eventually led her to write the widely regarded book Relax & Renew.
