Yoga After 60+ - Do’s and Don’ts for Practice & Teaching
One of the most common stereotypes in yoga is that yoga is for the young, fit, and flexible. And if you don’t fall into one of those categories, you can’t practice yoga. But the truth is, yoga is for every body.
People age 60 and up represents one of the largest untapped markets for yoga teachers. However, it takes specialized knowledge to teach the 60+ demographics. The yoga poses and practices that work for younger students need to be adapted to safely and effectively serve these more mature students.
Even more importantly, since people in this age group are likely to have one or more health issues, it’s important to know the common conditions to watch out for, and which precautions to take to avoid them.
In this free download, yoga therapist and author Carol Krucoff, co-founder of the Yoga for Seniors program at Duke Integrative Medicine, describes some of the unique considerations everyone needs to be aware of when teaching yoga to older yoga practitioners.
Carol shares her insights into why older people come to yoga, and what they’re looking to get out of it—which can be significantly different from what the younger crowd is after. She also covers some key pose considerations and poses and movements to avoid when teaching yoga to older students.
